Skills? No Classes?
« on: May 20, 2015, 11:55:16 AM »
Basically I'm relatively new to *W games and I have two questions:

  • Just curious. Is there any hack or interpretation that uses skills instead of moves?
  • Is there any hack that is working without classes?

Thank you!

http://buriedwithoutceremony.com/simple-world/

Simple World is a generic hack without classes.

The Bureau is a hack that uses die types and one or two descriptive words for items or 'skills' your 'agent' is proficient with.

Don't know if these will help with what you are looking for though. Moves are kind of what Apocalypse World games are built around.

My upcoming game Freebooting Venus uses skills and not classes.

In this, the first wave of PbtA games, it doesn't surprise me that playbooks dominate. I expect that we'll see a secondary branch of classless PbtA games develop, though, because there's nothing fundamental about playbooks.
