Gaining Levels With No XP

Has anyone done away with xp for gaining levels, and just decided everyone levels up at the most opportune time?

I haven't tried this, but I think my players would really miss the XP they get when they roll a 6 or less.  It takes a lot of the sting out of failing.

Yeah, the bonus XP for trying something you might not be good at is a pretty big incentive to give something a go unless you're in the direst of straits.
