Living Dungeon World at OrcCon 2012
« on: December 16, 2011, 08:18:01 PM »
A bunch of us hardcore Los Angeles Dungeon World fanatics are putting together a little special something at OrcCon in Los Angeles over Presidents day weekend in February: Living Dungeon World.

I'm excited to be doing it, but I'm also just as excited to see what the response is from the Strategicon attendees. Every Dungeon World session we've run in the previous couple of cons has gone down really well.

Each game will be a Dungeon Front (or two) then with a Campaign Front spanning them. We're also putting together a few mechanics to link the games and aid in the persistence of the characters and the world in a format where the players will be changing a lot. We'll post more about those as we develop them, I'm sure.

Sounds Awesome!
Wished I lived in LA so I could come play or GM!
What sort of Dungeon fronts are you creating? Trifolds like the spanterhook guild, or Dungeon Starters? Or something else? It'd be great to see after the con any custom starting moves (love letters) to the character classes if you have them too.  :)

Good Luck! I'm sure everyone will have a blast!

The five GMs are each making their own adventures and I doubt any two of us will be doing it the same way. We have an overall structure to the games and generally how they link, but each GM is working on the specifics themselves. There are people and items that connect the narrative, so there'll be a certain amount of collaboration on those.

I doubt I'll be making trifolds for mine. I like them aesthetically, but I don't find them very practical, so it's not worth busting out and fiddling with Scribus. I imagine that if I polished mine up for third party consumption, they would be more in the style of Jason Morningstar's Temple of Ungu.

Can't wait to play! Why is it not February yet?

In good news, within an hour of pre-registration, all but one of the LDW slots had filled to pre-reg capacity (50%).

In bad news, that probably means I won't get to play!  *single tear*

I admit, I signed up for one of our DW games.

...possibly two.

Hey man, you guys get to game all the time. It's no big deal for you to miss out on a couple sessions of DW. Me? My gaming is almost exclusively confined to conventions, so when I get a chance to play something I want to play, I'm playin' it. Etiquette be damned!

Haha, fair enough. I only really get to play DW at cons though. Usually I'm too busy running!

Holy Fecomancy!  Those filled up fast!  Sadly I was slow on the draw, because I was really curious to see how you were handling a living campaign.  Ah well.

I'm running 3 sessions of AW throughout the weekend, maybe it's some of you same folks?

You should still be able to register for some of them on the day. Don't be afraid to be an alternate either. We might have some overflow capacity.

If you have any questions about how we're handling a living campaign, feel free to ask!

...because we'd like to know, too!

Nah, we'll be fine.

Living Dungeon World was a blast. I think we had about 20-25 different players in the 41 slots we offered. All the tables were full and we possible could have filled another table at each of the slots.

We used Beta 1.1 with BBC XP and a bunch of extra between adventure downtime moves. We'll give more detail about that when we're fully recovered. I just finished my write ups for OrcCon, amongst which are the three LDW games I GMed. You can find those here.

In terms of playtesting, I didn't have any issues with anything. I used the new monster creation guidelines that will be in the next iteration of the Beta (here) and some of the pregen monsters in the Beta. Hit points and damage all worked well and, as I've said elsewhere, I like the current armour numbers.

I took a few pictures, so they'll surface at some point too.

Here's my recap of OrcCon, with a heavy emphasis on Living Dungeon World. This took me, like, three or four days to write. It's really very long. Plan accordingly. Make yourself a Dagwood sandwich first.
